What Do You Know About the Sludge Treatment Process?

Sep. 08, 2022

A typical sludge treatment process flow consists of four treatment or disposal stages. What are each of these four stages? Follow Huada to find out!

Four stages of sludge treatment

Sludge thickening

The main purpose of sludge thickening is to make an initial reduction in sludge volume and reduce the volume or equipment capacity of the subsequent treatment structures.

Sludge Digestion

Sludge digestion decomposes the organic matter in the sludge.

Sludge Dewatering

Sludge dewatering further reduces the capacity of the sludge.

Sludge Disposal

Sludge disposal uses some means to dispose of the final sludge.

What effects can be achieved after sludge treatment?

Reduction.

Due to the high water content of sludge, it is very large and fluid. After the above process, the volume of sludge is reduced to a tenth of its original volume and is converted from liquid to solid, which makes it easy to transport and dispose of.

Stabilization.

The sludge has a high organic content and is highly susceptible to fu decay and bad odor. After the digestion stage of the above process, the organic matter that is easy to be spoiled is decomposed and transformed, so it is not easy to be spoiled and the bad smell is greatly reduced, which is convenient for transportation and disposal.

Harmlessness.

The sludge, especially the primary sludge, contains a large number of pathogenic bacteria, parasite eggs and viruses, which can easily cause the spread of infectious diseases over a large area. After the digestion stage in the above process, it can kill most of the in-laws eggs, pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and greatly improve the sanitary index of sludge.

Resourcefulness.

Sludge is a resource which contains a lot of heat, its calorific value is between 10000 and 15000kJ/kg (dry sludge), which is higher than coal and coke. In addition, sludge is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which makes it an organic fertilizer with high fertilization efficiency. Through the digestion stage in the above process, the organic matter can be converted into biogas so that the heat in it can be utilized, and its fertilizing effect can be further improved. The processes often used for sludge thickening are gravity thickening, centrifugal thickening and air flotation thickening. Sludge digestion can be divided into two categories: anaerobic digestion and aerobic digestion. Sludge dewatering can be divided into two categories: natural drying and mechanical dewatering. The commonly used mechanical dewatering processes include plate and frame filter press dewatering, belt filter press dewatering, centrifugal dewatering, etc. There are many ways to dispose of sludge, mainly through agricultural and forestry use, sanitary landfill, incineration and production of construction materials.

Huada produces centrifugal sludge dewatering and drying equipment, usually used for sludge thickening and dewatering, which mainly consists of LW series decanter centrifuges (or screw presses), automatic flocculant preparation and dosing devices, and sludge crushing and block cutting. Please contact Huada for more information or latest quotation on sludge dewatering and drying equipment.
